The only meatless BBQ Pork in the county

Monday, July 12, 2010

Growing up with a monthly chinese family dinner, my veganism has left me yearning for bbq pork. thankfully, loving hut offers what i believe to be the only meatless bbq pork in the county and it is very delicious. the texture and bright red color are very reminiscent of the unmistakable asian meat i remember. the flavor is good enough to make this the only thing i order here. however, i do recommend trying their delicious and bright colored drinks. i always get a kiwi one that is refreshing and unique.

The consistency of the soy chicken was impressive

Sunday, July 11, 2010

For some reason my husband and I have driven past this small store front dozens of times without thinking to eat here. After spending the evening at the Norton-Simon, we were looking for a nearby vegan restaurant and decided to give it a shot. I ordered the Pumpkin, Eggplant, Tofu (PET) and my husband got the Orange "Chicken." Both dishes were delicious. PET is a bit spicy, but with a Thai Iced Tea to chase the spicier bites, it was perfect. The Orange "Chicken" was a bit sweet for my taste, but the consistency of the soy chicken was impressive (better than most fake meat).

This place is a good crossover for vegetarians

Saturday, June 26, 2010

This place doesn't scream vegetarian from the outside, but then again the location isn't really that noticeable (behind a car wash). The food is good for a vegan restaurant, and having just come back from living in Taiwan for half a year and often frequented their locations in Taipei, it's a bit pricey (or rather, it's insanely cheap in Taiwan). Their menu, however, is quite expansive and has a good variety of Asian and western food. Their rose lemonade is delish, and my favorite entree is the pho, though I can't stand the fake fish balls since it tastes way too real for me and I can't stand eating anything fishy. Their spicy burrito was pretty good too, but a bit on the dry side so it could've had some salsa (not pico de gallo, which they give you) on the side. Next time I go, I'm hoping to try their vermicelli and royal noodle.

I'm also not a vegetarian, as I oh-so-love-my-beef, but I do quite often eat vegetarian food, and feel this place is a good crossover for vegetarians and people who are open to trying vegetarian food.

You can't help but feel upbeat and happy!!

Wednesday, June 09, 2010

I'm going to put this out right now. I'm all about meat. I love it and nothing can replace it. But then I came across this place. Loving Hut is an adorable place where the walls are yellow. You can't help but feel upbeat and happy.

The food is good and you don't get the heavy feeling afterwards. I tried the spaghetti and the bun hue (sp? it's the middle option of the noodle soup section). I was expecting the spaghetti marinara sauce to be watery like how it is in most Asian restaurants, but it was thick and flavourful. The waitress suggested I try to bun hue because it's one of their specialities. Trust me, this is something you want to try. It's a little spicy for those that cant handle spicy. Each dish is about $6-9, which isn't too bad.

The waitress was very friendly and attentive. I want to try their other dishes now.

Loving Hut Let your imagination run wild!

Friday, May 07, 2010

Been driving past this place with a big smile and snicker... heh "Loving Hut" let your imagination run wild! =D Got lunch here with a vegetarian friend, since I'm a omnivore I probably wouldn't have chosen this place on my own. The prices not bad for vegan food, an average of $8 for dishes.

The white tables and pale yellow walls give this place a very clean and cheery look. I don't know about the huge sign thing on the ceiling, it looks like it should belong on a wall outside. WTH why is it there? Another odd looking thing is their chocolate chip cookies. It's like the baker has OCD and counted the chocolate chips for each cookie and arranged them symmetrically and evenly spaced... hmm.

There seems to be mixed reviews about this place, but what I had was delicious. Our waitress did forget we ordered a pot of green tea, but they extremely nice about it when we reminded her. All in all service was nice and food didn't take too long to come out. I am impressed at how flavourful the sans animal dishes were. Especially impressed with my friend's order of Shrimp Chow Mein, I had imitation crab before but it's made from fish. This imitation shrimp has the spooky chewy consistency of real shrimp and flavor... vegan magic!

I was also impressed with the imitation meat in my order of Golden Rolls and Teriyaki Vermicelli, you can almost see a 'meat' muscle pattern, the sauce tasted authentic too. Leave it to the Asians to come up with a convincing knock-off. ;) This is a lunch special item, so for the same price as their regular vermicelli I get bonus crispy egg rolls!! (no egg...it's vegan) =p

You can get a good mindf**k from the food served here, but they still can't beat my meat! If this place really wanted to encourage "Go Green and Save the Planet" maybe they can promote a cult of cannibalism to keep the population down. totally j/k anyways there's already HUFU (human tofu) to curb that appetite.

Did I mention a GOOD vegan restaurant?

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

I grew up in Alhambra, though have moved out of county, and to have a vegan restaurant here makes me so happy when I come back to visit! Did I mention a GOOD vegan restaurant? Mmm.

The prices are fair. The food is good. I ordered the Happy BBQ, and it was so yummy. That's my go to I guess.

The service was friendly but not as attentive as I'd expect. The place itself is like the other Loving Huts, but I always enjoy dining in :) I love to bring friends here to try some thing new if they're open to it, and they usually enjoy it too.

This may be a good place to try a vegan experience!

Sunday, March 14, 2010

This was my first time going to a vegan restaurant. Two of my friends had mentioned this was a pretty good place and so it got me curious. Since I'm not vegan, I can only compare these dishes from a non-vegan pallet.

Although the char-siu dish looks LOOKS AND ALMOST TASTES LIKE THE REAL CHA-SUI, it wasn't one of the best dishes there. I had the kabob dish and this dish was pretty good. I really liked the taste and while it was pretty darn close to tasting and looking like meat. And we also also had the rice noodle dish with "beef" and rolls. It had a sauce which complemented it quite nicely. No strong spices, just a tint of flavor...mild and light. It's perfect for a light lunch. I would have the say the prices are a bit expensive given the size of the dish but I suppose it may be worth it for vegans who just want a darn good meal! The size is perfect for girls (I finished my plate and taste other dishes) but guys would probably need to order 2 dishes.

The place is quaint...it's got white tables and chairs and a happy shade of yellow walls. So it's welcoming. We went on a Saturday for lunch around 1:30 and there 2 guys waiting on tables. They weren't too cognizant with the customers and it took a while to get their attention so we can order, or get more water, or just to get the check. If you're in the area and curious about vegan flood, this may be a good place to try a vegan experience.

What a jewel of a place this is!

Tuesday, March 09, 2010

I tried the burger as a baseline to other vegetarian burgers I've had in the past and it faired better. Then I nibbled on a few pieces of my friend's "teriyaki chicken" on a skewer and was taken aback by its wonderful taste and texture. It was very convincing. Then I washed it all down with a couple of their fruit drinks. I was sold...

In a community moreso known for greasy, mediocre, fast food Chinese food slopped on plates, this establishment is a godsend.

I'm coming back for dessert!

Sunday, February 28, 2010

Of course, I had to try their most popular dish, THE SPICY CHA CHA! The name in itself makes it worth trying. It was not so spicy, but full of cha cha if that makes any sense. Haha...these little shrimp-like creatures were so perfectly breaded. Usually, fried foods hurt my throat, but this didn't have that effect. Perhaps, they bake it or something.

The yellow noodles of the Wonton Noodle soup appeared wide and thick. I usually like my noodles thin, but this is an exception! They were oh so soft! The broth looked a bit oily, but it was well seasoned.

The Happy Barbecue dish had soy protein bits that were also in the soup. For that reason, this dish was not exciting for me. It didn't get my cha cha's going. The sauce had the right tanginess to it.

My mom wanted the pina colada which was nothing too special. I'd rather have the real thing. Bwahaha...but all the other drinks sure look good! A side cafe would be a nice addition. Add free wi-fi and I'd be here every weekend.

I'm coming back for dessert! ...once lent is over...

If all vegan food tasted like this, I MIGHT just go herbivore

Saturday, February 27, 2010

If all vegan food tasted like this, I MIGHT just go herbivore. My friend got the vermicelli and the soy meat tasted exactly like the pork you'd get at Vietnamese restaurants. It came with flour noodles, which was kind of weird, but overall the flavor was pretty spot on. I got the Guru's curry which isn't that exciting, just tofu and potatoes. Another friend got the Happy BBQ (the red meat aka char sui from Hong Kong BBQ places) that didn't taste like what it's suppose to, but it was decent enough. Best part of the meal was the fried tofu appetizer. mmmm smushy crispy crust tofu.

Desserts were gross. I don't care what you put, but any desert with the absence of milk and eggs just tastes offensive.

So full of love when I exited the doors

Monday, January 25, 2010

I don't have a problem making decisions at most restaurants. Cuz I'm veg, there's usually only one or two things I can eat. However, the Hut's menu was positively teeming with deliciousness. I was so overwhelmed by indecision, I couldn't even order a drink or dessert. Sorry about that.

That was all just as well, because my guy and I were stuffed after our meal of Spicy Cha-Cha (Insert joke here), Au Lac Special Salad, Pho, and Golden Roll. We even had enough for a midnight snack. Spicy Cha-Cha was indeed spicy. Our fave was def the Au Lac Special Salad. I wish we'd ordered two.

The gentleman who waited on us was really lovely. The place was clean and bright. My belleh was so full of love when I exited the doors, I could see how this place got its name.
